For centuries, herds of up to 2 million animals have followed fixed routes in search of fresh grass. We owe the fact that the animals did not fall victim to human greed to Bernhard Grzimek and his son Michael, who recognized the threat in the 1950s. They managed to maintain awareness of nature conservation and the preservation of the Serengeti worldwide.
The Serengeti is a paradise and sanctuary for predators. The estimated population is 3,000 lions and cheetahs are seen more frequently in hardly any other national park. Numerous crocodiles also live in the Mara and Grumeti rivers.
The wildebeest and zebra population is estimated at more than 1.5 million animals. Hippos can also be observed on the various rivers.
The central Serengeti is known for its good viewing opportunities for predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas.
The landscape is also impressive and diverse. It is more than the endless steppe. In the southern and central area, open grass savanna predominates, occasionally interspersed with acacias and granite rocks called kopjes.
